Health Update

18 June 2006

Dear Friends of My Mother:

I write this letter to all of you worldwide who have expressed an interest in knowing more about my mother’s health and her care.

I am sorry to inform you of a disturbing development. My mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Naturally, in deciding how to treat this disease, our family wants to respect our mother’s general philosophy in dealing with her health. As you know, she pursued a combination of modern medicine and naturopathic remedies.

In consultation with Murray Steinman, my co-guardian, and an excellent team of doctors, I have been looking at a promising medication. This medication is projected to reduce the size of the tumor through essentially starving it. The doctors tell us that the type of tumor she has will respond well to the medication. We feel it is a viable treatment route and have started Mother on it. We are also looking at other modalities, including the option of surgery.

In addition, we are considering reasonable options presented by alternative medicine. Of course, Mother already pursues many of the most obvious anti-cancer therapies, including a healthy, high-fiber diet containing many antioxidants, along with appropriate vitamin supplements. Although there may be many causes of cancer, my personal guess is that a course of hormone therapy earlier in her life may have made her vulnerable to this illness.

Mother is taking the situation with good humor and does not appear to be suffering any immediate pain in the region. You can be sure that we will do everything that is prudent, given her preexisting medical condition, to treat her and ensure her comfort. Those of you who are interested in praying for her will want to know that the tumor is in her right breast.

Thank you all for your continuing concern for Mother’s life, health and work. I will keep you posted as more information is available.

With love,

Erin
